                  Itic, long awaited invasion to liberate KLtwait began for

                  The 2nd Marine Division, s (-to ,qhor.,i Ist ('I-iger) I-"de was
              attached) 6th Marine Regiment (Etti tvi@irines) was -first
              thrDLigh the berm separating @-.iLidi Arabia And VL!tt,@iit at
              05 0 hours. Their mission tqis to breach @i series of
              complex ininefields and obstacles that lay several
              kilometers inside KLt@txit, xlj.(2wing the Sth Marine PeElimen-l@
              (B,tli         xnd -I- iger BEtt-tl.e Team to pass tl-iro@igh and
              c2ontiri@tp the Attael.@ north.


                  Along -File breakthro@tqh created by the Cth tft,-Irir@L-si
              there was little evidence of the nltch feared "Saddarn 1-ine"
              of defensive fortifications and obstacles. There was no
              evidence of burning oil moats, chemical mines, or other
              promised horrors. The obstacles consisted of two
              mi,.qefi.el.ds measuring @kbol-tt @ mile long Ind a half-niile
              wide. There v,@.ts also @i network of berms and trenches
              containing Iraqi -reservists ,vho quicicly surrendered to the
              advancing MIriTl2S.

            As news of the sL@ccess-CLkl brexohinli operation came
              over the radio, COL Sylvester and the soldiers of the
              Tiger Battle Team waiting on -the SaLkdi side of the berm
              were eager to make 'cl-)e crossing into Ki-twait.. For COL
              Sylvester, -the hok-trs before tt-ie battles were -A brief chance
              to relax,,
