Reducing the hours of operation will prolong the life of the
prototype hardware. (U S Army Chemical School recommends up to
6 hours per day, which @oincides with the chemical weapons
employment tactics). A trained operator will be required to
chock on t@e XV21 periodically and to investigate all alarms.
The system s control panel will inform the operator of nerve or
blister alarm and will identify which of the field(s) of view
are in alarm.
The USMC has proposed a different, more aggressive, employment
concept which uses the XM21 to support offensive maneuvers.
However, the PM office recommends that the Army use the XM21 in
fixed site operations.
f. The maintenance concept for this hardware is to use the
USMC's in-kingdom DS maintenance facility. The USMC has trained
maintainers who will be repairing their five detectors. Monthly
DS maintenance of these systems will be required to make
internal checks of system alignment. Depot level repair will be
conducted stateside at the development contractor's facility in
Deland, FL.
g. Information from the use of the XM21 in SWA is required.
The information includes a record of the daily operations,
results of monthly maintenance and feedback on the technical
manuals, operations and how the data provided by the XM21 are
utilized. The above information will be obtained by the PM,
NBCDS representative located with the XVIII ABN Corps Ist
COSCOM.
