MEMORANDUM FOR KE:RO CO ER
SUBL7ECT: Air Quality Information
1. Attached for your information is a copy of the DOD request to
the LTCS for assistance in having the Army Environmental Hygiene
Agency perform air quality tests in the Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
2. The recent test data collected by the EPA does not lead to any
definite conclusions concerning the effects of being exposed to the
oil well smoke; however, the EPA group does believe that there are
increased health risks
3. The ASD (Health Affairs) has formed a tri-service working group
to evaluate the health affects of the smoke on civilian and
military personnel in this area. The Army Surgeon has the lead in
this effort.
4. Under the Army Surgeon's guidance, the Army Environmental
Hygiene Agenby has established a team that it is ready to dispatch
to perform exhaustive testing in this area, provided that CENTCOM
concurs in that action. As of yesterday, the team was still in the
U.S. There is apparently some reluctance on CENTCOM's part to have
the team deployed.
5. I will keep you posted on further developments.
