TRAINING ISSUE NO. 2 Providers Must Train on Wartime Equipment
(SGHR ITEMS NOs. 7, 140)
DISCUSSION: Medical personnel should have ongoing training at home MTFs
treating patients using actual field equipment prepositioned at contingency
sites. Anesthesia personnel at one facility refused to administer anesthesia
for non-emergent surgical procedures unless they were overwhelmed with
casualties. Felt equipment was less than "state of the art."
RECOMMENDATIONS: Medical personnel train with actual field equipment at home
MTF during peacetime. Validate adequacy of contingency anesthesia equipment.
Personnel must be trained on equipment.
ACTIONS REQUIRED: Determine appropriate equipment training requirements for
medical personnel during peacetime. Validate adequacy of contingency
anesthesia equipment. Ensure adequate training on DEPMEDs equipment for
medical personnel.
ACTIONS COMPLETED: The ACC Medical Group Composite Plans is addressing this
issue. Personnel not involved in this initiative are afforded such training at
Sheppard AFB and/or Alpina based on their mission. Sheppard is responsible for
exercising 2E through 500-bed taskings. In addition, WARMEDs now focuses on
skill-specific training.
STATUS: OPEN.
