 EYE CARE

 1.   Eye irritations and infections are reduced by frequent washing of the face
 and eyes, and wearing goggles during dusty windy conditions.

 2.   Sunglasses to overcome glare and protect the retina of the eye for night
 vision are important.

 3.   Wear of contact lenses in chemical environments is prohibited by AR 40-63;
 contact lens' exacerbate vision problems in the M17A1 chemical protective mask.
 Care and cleaning of contact lenses is difficult to manage in the desert environment
 and lack of cleanliness could result in eye irritation and/or injury.


 NON-MEDICAL OPERATIONAL OBSERVATIONS

 1.   At night, a match or lighted cigarette can be seen for up to 3 kilometers over
 the flat desert surface.

 2.   Because of a lack of natural cover, vehicles should be dispersed and
 camouflaged.

 3.   Electrical and mechanical devices have upper limits of thermal tolerance and
 should be shaded from direct sunlight and protected from dust.

 4.   Sand and dust will necessitate more frequent cleaning and maintenance of
 equipment.

 5.   Techniques observed to be helpful to Saudi National Guardsmen were:
 limiting movement during the daytime, digging prepared positions for vehicles, using
 natural vegetation camouflage, and providing sand texture to vehicles with a
 mixture of oil and sand.
