           * as demand for physical exertion increases, performance will
deteriorate even in the first 4 hours of duty

            * after 4 hours of duty. attention-demanding mental performance will
begin to steadily and progressively deteriorate over the course of an 8-hour shift

    e.   Simple "Fixes"

          * work 4-hour shifts, even if it means working multiple shifts in 24
hours

          * enforce SOP for double-checking of coding, communications, map
coordinates, etc.

          * rotate at-risk jobs and soldiers in 4-hour shifts

          * allow tasks to be done more slowly than normal to maintain accuracy

          * enforce drinking and eating discipline

          * overtrain visual tasks (like marksmanship) in protective masks

          * overtrain communication tasks

          * mark chemical protective overgarments, masks, and hoods so that
name, rank, and duty position can be recognized easily

          * routinely use approved anti-fogging compounds with chemical
protective masks

          * routinely use approved moisture-reducing/absorbing compounds on
the face to prevent sweat from obscuring vision in the chemical protective mask

          * enforce prohibitions (AR 40-63) against wearing contact lenses in
chemical environments; they exacerbate vision problems in the chemical protective
mask
          NOTE:  This does not pertain to AH-64 Apache helicopter
          crew members fined with contact lenses by medical
          personnel so the lHADSS can be used with the M-43
          aviator protective mask in an air-cooled cockpit)

          * insure that soldiers remove rings; rings can cause dangerous
swelling of the fingers (rings with sentimental or superstitious value can be strung
on the dogtag chain)

          * enforce MOPP discipline; wear the lowest level possible
